Matthew 26:31-75, Betrayal of Jesus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then Jesus said to them, ‘You will all become deserters because of me this night
— Matthew 26:31

NL Daily Devotion for Tuesday, April 16, 2019

by Daniel D. Maurer Clergy Stuff

For this day’s daily devotion from the Narrative Lectionary, I invite you to watch this.

Yes, I know this is a “Hollywood-ized” scene of what took place. Yes, I know that everyone in this video is white while historically it most definitely was not that way.

What I want you to look at specifically is the confrontation that Jesus makes with Judas and the leaders, and do this . . .

SEE WHERE YOU IDENTIFY WITH THOSE BETRAYING AND ARRESTING JESUS

It’s easier to do than you might think. For this day in Holy Week, remember that it was us who betrayed God; remember that it was you.

Tough to hear, no? As it should be.

I don’t want to betray you, God, but I do anyway sometimes. Grant me the strength and the awareness to stay devoted, even when that’s not the easiest thing to do. Amen.
