Matthew 23:37-39, Lament over Jerusalem

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
— Matthew 23:37b

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, April 5, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

I was a willful kid. My parents called me a “tough cookie.” Strong and independent, I would look right at my parents and do exactly what I had been told not to. I chilled out quite a bit as I grew up, but that defiant core remains.

God’s children are willful, despite all that God has done for us from the very beginning. We want to do things our way. We want what we want when we want it. God sends us prophets—those who bear God’s truth—and we cover our ears and go “LA LA LA LA LA!!!”

Jesus laments over this self-destructive willfulness, and proclaims its dire consequences. Yet in the same breath, he speaks a word of veiled comfort. We will not see Jesus again “until…” We will bear the negative outcome of our faithlessness, yes, but Jesus will redeem us, and we will one day shout “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Lord Jesus, lay waste to our stubborn self-serving so that we might open our eyes and ears to the promise of your unfailing love.
