Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, April 6, 2019
by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff
Jesus warns of false messiahs, wars, famines, earthquakes, persecutions—all signs of the end of time. Yet all these things have been present with us to a greater or lesser degree for the past 2,000 years. Pick anyplace on the globe and you will find at least two or three. Our lives are full of false messiahs, promising whatever it is we want to hear to win us to their hurtful causes.
We, as Christians, are to endure. Endurance does not mean we are to condone such things. Endurance is to resist evil wherever we find it. Exhorted by Jesus not to be afraid, we are to face the violence and hatred and desolation without falling into despair, withdrawing into whatever comfort we can wrest from the present time.
Endurance means sitting in the suffering. It means continuing to strive for God and neighbor in spite of it, trusting in the promise of our salvation, no matter what happens here. This is the good news of the kingdom!
God, please remove my fear, that I might endure life’s challenges as a testament to your power and love.
