Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Friday, March 22, 2019
by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff
What shepherd doesn’t leave his flock to find the lost sheep?
Well, I’m not into animal husbandry all that much, but it seems to me that most sane shepherds would never do this, Jesus!
Once again, Jesus lets us enter into the wacky, wild world of the parables, where things kind of look like the world, but not really. All for the sake of teaching us and making us think, again and again, does Jesus share these parables in this way.
The conclusion that you and I may come to is that, no, reckless shepherds wouldn’t do that; they should never leave the whole flock just for the sake of one.
But in Jesus’ world of the parables, the shepherd does this. And God does too.
Jesus’ God is just as reckless with God’s love as the shepherd is reckless with welfare of the rest of the sheep.
And thanks be to God, that God acts this way. God’s love is wild, wacky, reckless and unbounded.
Amen.
