Up to this point in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus’ power has been limited to the stuff he did on land. Namely, that Jesus healed and taught. But that was about it.

Then Jesus took his followers on a boat to go “to the other side.” This phrase is important, because what’s about to happen in the story is unique. Jesus will calm the storm and the waters.

Briefly, one of the thins you need to know about ancient religions is that God was the only one who could control the weather, the sky, and the sea. That Jesus not only heals and teaches with such authority, but also can control the storm, means that Jesus not only has a connection with God, but that Jesus IS God.

This is something altogether new. That’s what the disciples saw too, and hence, we witness their wonder and devotion at this act. God controls the chaos. Jesus controls the chaos and brings truth, light and order.

Thank you, God, that you bring order and peace to me for my stormier days, now and in the future. Amen.
