Matthew 13:1-8, Parable of Sower

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
— Matthew 13:8

NL Daily Devotion for Thursday, January 23, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

I’m no gardener. In fact, the fastest way to kill a plant is to give it to me. My mom, on the other hand, has that magical green thumb, and loves to coax flourishing life from the earth. It’s a gift she has always possessed and one which, sadly, did not get passed down to me.

Luckily, my mother also has the gift of coaxing flourishing life from children—she spent more than 40 years teaching preschool, and even longer teaching children in church settings. Not only was I a direct beneficiary of her gift, but I also inherited a deep desire to similarly nurture faith in children and youth.

All of us have the potential to grow God’s word in our hearts and bring forth abundant love and grace into the world. Each of us is called to tend the soil of our own hearts so that God’s word can thrive there, and each of us is called to encourage that growth in others of all ages.

God of abundance, plant your seed in my heart, and help me to nurture its growth. Amen.
