Mark 3:1-6, The Man with a Withered Hand

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him.

Obviously, the photo above isn’t anything like what happens in today’s daily reading for the Narrative Lectionary! But, it’s the closest I could come to when thinking about hands and/or healing.

The thing about today’s reading that’s so radical is not that Jesus heals a man’s hand, but that the withered hand and the man’s suffering were of no consequence to those trying to conspire to condemn Jesus.

Jesus, on the other hand (see what I did there?!), believes that making someone well and healing them ALWAYS takes precedence over rules and guidelines.

The funny thing is, the scribes and Pharisees know this, too. That’s why they don’t say anything to Jesus.

But Jesus helps the man, regardless. And he does no, not only to prove a point, but always to allay the man’s suffering.

So, too, Jesus heals our suffering, no matter the day or time or place or . . . anything—even against those who would stand in our way. Jesus heals. Period.
