Jesus’ disciples were well equipped. Ok, maybe they were sent without the resources we might consider necessary: staff, bag, bread, money, tunic. But they were equipped with all they really needed: the good news of Jesus written on their hearts through daily exposure to and emulation of Jesus’ thoughts, words, and actions.

So, what of the food and money? Jesus’ sending demanded that his disciples become interdependent with the people they were sent to teach. The disciples would bring a much-needed word of hope in a weary world; hearers of the word would offer the hospitality necessary to continue the journey. Instead of worrying about what Jesus’ didn’t send with them, we might consider what Jesus did sent with them—physical, social, emotional, and financial interdependence on God’s people. Those would prove to be far more valuable than money.

What might you get rid of so that you can gain something greater?
