Luke 8:40-56, Jairus’ Plea and a Woman Restored

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then Jesus asked, ‘Who touched me?’ When all denied it, Peter said, ‘Master, the crowds surround you and press in on you.’

This is one of my favorite stories from the Gospel of Luke. I love how it’s actually TWO stories wrapped into one. And I also love how Jesus knows, inherently and instinctively, that there is someone who sought him out, even amidst crowds and crowds of people (all of whom also have requests or want to just gawk at Jesus).

What great comfort this is, indeed! Even in all the world, God cares for our needs and hears our pleas. Even those who culture has declared “unclean” or “unworthy” are worth the world to God. Through Jesus, we know that we can approach God with any need.

Thank you, God, for seeing my needs in the crowds. Amen.
