Luke 8:22-39, Jesus Calms a Storm and Heals the Gerasene Demoniac

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, ‘What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me’
— Luke 8:28

by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff

Today’s daily reading from the Narrative Lectionary comes from a section in Luke where Jesus really pulls out all the plugs to show others who he is. You see, only God can really control the weather, that’s true. But, in some ways, that’s only a magic trick. Jesus isn’t about magic or tricks.

Jesus is about providing new life for others, even when they don’t expect it, like we see here in the healing he does (or exorcism, depending on how you look at it).

The demon in the country of Gerasa, which, by the way, is here—this demon knows immediately who Jesus is and from where his power is derived: from God.

This Jesus even has the power to bring those who have died (or are in the process of dying) and separating themselves from God. That, my friends, may be the most wonderful surprise for all of us.

Thank you God, for Jesus! Amen!
