Luke 8:40-52, Jairus’ Daughter Healed

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

When Jesus heard this, he replied, ‘Do not fear. Only believe, and she will be saved.’
— Luke 8:50

NL Daily Devotion for Thursday, February 6, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

This one’s hard to swallow. Honestly. How many people go through personal crises, terminal illnesses, widespread chaos and destruction on a daily basis? And how many of them believe and love God with all their hearts, souls, mind and strength and still suffer, still die? How can I take these simple words of Jesus at face value?

I wonder about the word “saved” in this passage about Jairus’ daughter. Does it just mean made alive again? Healed of whatever illness killed her? Or is there something deeper. I have to believe that regardless of what happens, illness, war, environmental catastrophe, our being saved still stands. That God is with us in the midst of whatever life throws at us, and will bring us home into God’s loving embrace for all eternity.

Eternal God, help me to always hope in you. Amen.
