Luke 14:1-6, Healing on the Sabbath

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then he said to them, ‘If one of you has a child or an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on a sabbath day?’ And they could not reply to this.

Mic drop! Jesus is so good at silencing his detractors with a few decisive words. Here, the Pharisees, true experts in God’s law, are complaining because Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath, when no one is supposed to do any work whatsoever, including healing. Jesus immediately turns it around—if it was your child or ox, if it was your possession, there’s no way you’d just leave it in the well to die until the law said you could lift a hand to help. Puh-leeze! Hypocrites!

God holds every single life to be of immeasurable value. And no law—not even God’s own law!—is just if it is used to harm or diminish another human being or life of any kind. Period.

Where do I see laws in my country that are unjust for this reason? What is my call to change them?
