Luke 8:4-21, Jesus Speaks in Parables

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
— Luke 8:11

My children have grown into their teenage years. Yes, prayers for me are accepted, feel free!

One thing I truly miss doing is reading them a bedtime story when they were younger. Holding them in my lap, watching them listen intently to me, and entering into a new story-realm was precious for the very reason that for me and my wife, it will never be again. (Unless grandchildren are on the way; one never knows).

Parables from Jesus are sort-of like storytime for adults. But they’re weird. Like, really really weird sometimes. Often, the “moral” of the story turns out to be something not at all what we expected, and like today, Jesus has to go all explain-y for us to get them.

Parables take us out of our world and thrust us into another so that we ponder again what it means to be a part of God’s family, all sitting on God’s gigantic lap, listening to stories that shock us and make us wonder, all the same.

Jesus, your parables move us into your world, so that I might be more like you. Amen.
