John 16:16-24, Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
— John 16:22

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, August 21, 2020

Jesus said these words when he left his disciples. He would not longer be with them in person, and they would mourn him. But he promised he would be with them again, and their time of mourning would not just end, but turn to perpetual joy.

We all experience pain. In the immortal words of Wesley, from The Princess Bride, “Life is pain. Anyone who says otherwise is probably selling something.” When we face serious challenges or loss, we will mourn. But we live in the promise that through Jesus’ love, pain can be transformed, and we do not have to live in that pain forever.

Gracious God, hold me in my pain, weep with me, and lead me through my suffering to joy in you. Amen.
