Philippians 2:5-11, Servant Song

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness.

Humility. What a concept. It’s not something that comes easily to me. Or probably anyone. It is, in fact, a lifelong spiritual practice. We are driven by a hundred different factors to lift ourselves above those around us—our desire for survival, our privilege, our greed, our need for self-worth. It goes against our grain to accept that we are no better nor worse than any other human being. Yet humility is freeing. It opens us to recognizing our true purpose, allows us to love and be loved.

We can’t possibly understand or hope to reach the kind of humility Jesus demonstrated by becoming one of us, by living a life of service, and by dying at the hands of an oppressive government, all because he (and he was God) loved us so completely he was willing to go to hell and back for us. This kind of humility isn’t attainable for us. Yet this is the example, and God calls us to strive for what humility is possible.

Developing humility requires honest, openness, willingness, self-examination, and acting in service to others. It’s not going to happen overnight. But it can be a beautiful journey.

Do I see myself as better or worse than others? How can God help me strive for humility?
