Matthew 28:16-20, The Sending of the Disciples

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
— Matthew 28:20b

NL Daily Devotion for Thursday, August 20, 2020

by R. M. Fergus, Clergy Stuff

We are not alone. There are going to be a lot of times we feel like it. Times when people fail us. Times when we have to end relationships, face challenges, struggle in big and small ways. Not everyone has a strong support network. Not everyone has healthy people in their lives to give guidance or lend strength. And even those of us who do have these things can find ourselves feeling completely isolated when life hands us something we simply can’t handle.

Whether we feel it or not, Jesus is there with us, always, to the end of time. Whatever we’re going through, we don’t have to do it on our own resources. Jesus holds us in our suffering, and shows up for us again and again in ways we may not even recognize.

I don’t believe for one moment the old idea that “God never gives us more than we can handle.” God doesn’t give us suffering at all! And life gives people plenty of things that no human being could handle. God, in Christ, is there. Always.

Where had Jesus shown up in my life when I least expected it?
