Joel 2:28-29, God’s Spirit Poured Out

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit.

We are all called to be prophets. To speak God’s love into the world, a love that crosses boundaries, speaks truth to power, defends creation, and lets go of self for the good of all.

Greta Thunberg is a prophet, crying out on behalf of our dying earth, standing up to nations so mired in self-interest they are blind to the crisis that will make all their self-preservation pointless. So many want to discount or disregard her wholesale because she speaks the truth, and the truth is terrifying. So it was with the biblical prophets throughout history.

We can’t just look at Greta, or others like her, and decide we couldn’t possibly do what they do. It’s simply not the case. The Holy Spirit has been poured out on all of us, and through the Spirit, we are empowered to prophesy—to make known God’s truth and love even in the face of hostility.

Holy Spirit, embolden me to be a prophet and proclaim your truth wherever there is injustice. Amen.
