Job 18, Bildad Spouts Nonsense

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Surely the light of the wicked is put out, and the flame of their fire does not shine. The light is dark in their tent, and the lamp above them is put out. Their strong steps are shortened, and their own schemes throw them down.
— Job 18:5-7

If only. As it stands today, those who have power and wealth and use it to maintain privilege at the expense of countless others and the natural world seem to be immovable. The writer of Job struggled with these same issues, and uses Job’s buddy Bildad to speak the absurdity of the notion that God prospers the righteous and punishes the wicked. No one was more righteous than Job, and his life was a complete disaster. While all around him, the wicked prospered even as they ignored God’s directive to care for the widow and the orphan and the alien.

Yet Job still does not take this as reason to reject God’s sovereignty. Despite rejecting what was the commonly held belief about how God works in people’s lives, he holds on to his faith in the living God who promises to redeem.

It’s hard for me to have faith like Job’s when I see what goes on in my country and the world, all the greed, oppression, injustice, environmental degradation… I have to hold on to the truth that God is right in the midst of all of it, and will keep God’s promises.

God, keep me in faith so that I may act according to your will for the world. Amen.
