Job 19, Hope Out of Despair

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!
— Job 19:25-27

Wow. Just wow. That Job could proclaim this in the midst of his abject misery, after the loss of his children, all his possessions, his health, everything! We often think of these words of Job in relation to Jesus, but that takes them out of context. These are words of hope rising out of despair.

Frankly, I could use a little of this kind of hope. Don’t get me wrong, my life is a cake walk compared to Job. I live in unbelievable privilege as a straight, white, middle class woman living in the United States. But I am aware that my children are inheriting a world in ecological crisis, which is inextricably bound up in systems designed to reward the ultra-privileged by perpetrating injustice on everyone else. And I honestly don’t see it changing.

I, and all of us, need to hear Job’s proclamation of hope!

Then in my flesh I shall see Go, whom I shall see on my side. My heart faints within me!
