Jeremiah 32:1-25, Jeremiah Buys a Field

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then my cousin Hanamel came to me in the court of the guard, in accordance with the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Buy my field that is at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

I’ve heard it said that any time you think you’ve gotten a message from God, you ought to get a second opinion. This seemingly odd story about Jeremiah bears witness to this idea. The prophet gets a message from God to buy a field even though the land is soon to be completely taken over by the Chaldeans. He probably thought God was nuts, and questioned whether he had heard or understood correctly. But then his cousin shows up and has a field to sell him, and Jeremiah thinks, “Ah! So it was God and that was the message.” At which point, Jeremiah goes and buys the field.

There have been times in my life when I have felt so strongly that some opportunity was directly from God, and pursued it only to find out that it had really been my own wishful thinking that was in play. At other times, though, what seemed to be divine inspiration was corroborated, whether through the wise counsel of people in my life, or a series of seeming coincidences, or both. In those times, when I had the humility to set aside my own desires and really listen, I have been led to much more stable and joyful places.

What are the different ways God has spoken to me in my life?
