Jeremiah 31:31-37, A New Covenant

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Thus says the Lord:
If the heavens above can be measured,
and the foundations of the earth below can be explored,
then I will reject all the offspring of Israel
because of all they have done,
says the Lord.

Materialists argue this can be done. That if we just have enough of and the right kind of science, we can—and will!—solve every mystery of the universe. And, yeah. Not gonna happen. I mean, take human consciousness, for example. No one—not one single scientist—can even figure out what it is much less how we come to have it. And as for the “heavens above”, sure, we can measure the age of our universe, its rate of expansion, we can estimate how many stars there are, galaxies, etc., at least in the visible, “known” universe. But in the end, we have yet to answer all the questions about where it came from and where it’s going. We have theories. Some of them good. But we’ve reached a point in physics where the whole entire thing has become theoretical, because no one can make sense of the things we’re observing!

I digress, as I often do. God’s statement here is rhetorical. On the day when you’ve figured everything out, that’s the day I’ll reject my children—all people, all creation. And that is not ever going to happen. So God will never, ever, ever reject us. Hold onto that when things aren’t so great. You are loved more than you can possibly comprehend.

Have I ever felt rejected by God? Why? Do I still?
