Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when the city shall be rebuilt for the Lord from the tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. And the measuring line shall go out farther, straight to the hill Gareb, and shall then turn to Goah. The whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes, and all the fields as far as the Wadi Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate towards the east, shall be sacred to the Lord. It shall never again be uprooted or overthrown.”

We’ll come back even better! Such words of hope for a city about to be destroyed. We won’t just rebuild what was there, we’ll expand it, make it even more grand. This is a message of hope to me today. Forgive me for getting political.
The fact is that our current situation here in the U.S., in which a narcissistic power monger is leading a hate-filled charge to destroy our democracy, does not center in said narcissist. His election to a second non-consecutive term is the inevitable outcome of a deeply broken system. And those of us who are opposed to him and all he stands for bear some of that responsibility. There are some people who think we just need to hold our breath until the mid-terms or the next presidential election where the outrage against 45/47 will be so great he and his ilk will be shown the door. Then things will “go back to normal”. But, honey, normal is not what we need. We need an entire restructuring. A great awakening. A new paradigm for how our government ought to work in order to allow the maximum flourishing for every single person and our natural environment. We deceive ourselves if we say that the Democrats, as they are, can deliver this. We don’t need to just “rebuild” the city that is being razed by MAGA. We need to build something new, bigger, better, more loving, more inclusive, more centered in the commitment to everyone.
The days are surely coming, says the Lord. I do hope so.
What are my beliefs about the role of government in the well-being of all people?
