Isaiah 6:1-13, A Vision of God in the Temple

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’
— Isaiah 6:8

The Bible is full of call stories. God calls out to seemingly ordinary people and asks them to do extraordinary things. “Noah, build an ark.” “Moses, go up against Pharaoh.” “Jeremiah, tell the people what they don’t want to hear.” In almost all of these stories, the person called argues with God in an effort to get out of the call. Moses actually says, “O my Lord, please send someone else.” (Ex 4:13 NRSV)

Isaiah is different. He hears God calling in the temple vision and quickly responds, “Here am I; send me!” With an exclamation point.

Isaiah is an example for us. We are each called by God to a unique purpose, and if we are true to God’s call, we will most certainly be in conflict with others at some point or another. Yet even knowing this, we can enthusiastically cry out, “Here am I, send me!” because we know that we do not do this work alone. God the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work through us.

How can I respond with joy to God’s call today?
