Isaiah 7:1-25, Isaiah Reassures King Ahaz

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: ‘Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.

Oh, for crying out loud, Ahaz, God offered to give you a sign and you declined it! I can just see Isaiah rolling his eyes expansively as he says, “Dude, isn’t it enough that you exhaust everyone around you? Do you have to wear God out with your indecisiveness? Fine, then. God will give you a sign without you asking for it.”

I kind of feel like Ahaz sometimes. I get scared about things (not like the imminent invasion Ahaz was stressing about, of course) and find myself in need of reassurance, but when I get that reassurance from someone, I still doubt it. I cling to my fear as if that’s the only thing that’s real, the only possible outcome, and somewhere God is rolling God’s eyes in exhaustion.

God’s signs, reassurances, and promises are always available to me in the words of scripture, in the quiet of contemplation, and sometimes even in pretty obvious signs, if I will only open my eyes and ears for them. I know that God is always beside me in my fear.

Loving God, thank you for the reassurance of your promise and presence with me always. Amen.
