Isaiah 45:18-19, The Lord Speaks the Truth

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I did not speak in secret,
in a land of darkness;
I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,
‘Seek me in chaos.’
I the Lord speak the truth,
I declare what is right.
— Isaiah 45:19

Truth is the opposite of chaos. That’s an interesting thought. God created all that is out of chaos by speaking the Word. That word is, of course, truth. Thus truth is a sure antidote to chaos.

Which makes sense to me, considering the present state of our world, and how much of what is going pear-shaped on the regular is a direct result of mass disinformation campaigns. And even before modern technology, those with wealth and power traded in half-truths or flat-out lies in order to maintain their position at any expense. I think of how major fuel companies all knew—had scientific proof!—that the use of their product would lead directly to climate change, and how they deliberately not only buried the truth, but entered upon a campaign of disinformation in order to keep people buying oil. And now we live in the worldwide chaos that is a direct result of their lies.

It also makes me think of how so many people who have spoken the truth to the powers that be have been silenced in one way or another—slandered, arrested, murdered—in the service of lies and chaos.

God speaks nothing but truth. Truth turns chaos into order. May we all be inspired to speak God’s truth to the powers of this age.

Where do I see truth being used to combat chaos?
