Isaiah 42:21-25, Israel’s Disobedience

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Who gave up Jacob to the spoiler, and Israel to the robbers? Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned, in whose ways they would not walk, and whose law they would not obey? So he poured upon him the heat of his anger and the fury of war; it set him on fire all around, but he did not understand; it burned him, but he did not take it to heart.

One definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. By that definition, it would seem that God’s people were pretty insane, and it got them in trouble over and over and over again. Now I don’t believe God actually sends war to punish people, but sometimes it’s SO obvious what we do to ourselves. We deal with the direct consequences of our actions, our refusal to listen to God and live in relationship with God, and we still don’t get it. We can’t figure out why we keep walking into the wall, as if this time it’s not going to be there.

God tells us again and again that if we only listened, if we only loved God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and loved our neighbors as ourselves, we would not keep hitting that wall. We would not live in a world torn apart by war and oppression and environmental degradation. As Christians, we are called to help the world recognize the insanity of our current situation, and be a channel for God’s healing and peace.

Loving God, restore me to sanity, that I might choose your way in my life each day. Amen.
