Isaiah 41:21-29, The Futility of Idols

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I stirred up one from the north, and he has come, from the rising of the sun he was summoned by name. He shall trample on rulers as on mortar, as the potter treads clay.

It’s nearly always a wonder to me, reading the Old Testament, why the prophets of Israel were constantly railing against idolatry. I think it has something to do with the fact that human beings are idol machines.

We consistently place our hopes in things which are not alive or real.

And, no, we might not be casting actual, literal golden baby cows which we set out to fall to our knees and worship. However, the impetus to find solace in things other than God is strong.

Redirecting our hope to the one, true God is often easier than we realize. It begins with the acknowledgement that we need to turn back to God.

O God, strengthen my faith in you and direct my life to you. Amen.
