Isaiah 11:1-9, The Peaceful Kingdom

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth.
— Isaiah 11:3-4a

This makes me think about the billions and billions of dollars spent on marketing every year. We get bombarded—through what our eyes see and our ears hear—by messages telling us what to think, how to look, what jobs to get, what products to buy, who is and isn’t desirable, and on and on. While the motive of this marketing is to get us to spend money, it winds up creating our entire culture, shaping our attitudes about the world and the people around us. It takes concerted effort to put aside these messages and see things as they are.

This is what God promises in Isaiah—a leader who can do just that, who can get past what the world is telling them to see and hear and think and feel and recognize things for what they actually are. Only in that state of truth can real justice be done, and the world be shifted to one of interdependent community in which everyone flourishes. Jesus is that leader, and Jesus calls us to be that kind of leader in our own communities, too.

Am I aware of how much influence marketing has on the way I see the world? How can I dig deeper into this?
