Isaiah 22:1-14, A Warning of Destruction of Jerusalem

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

On that day the Lord God of hosts called to weeping and mourning, to baldness and putting on sackcloth; but instead there was joy and festivity, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating meat and drinking wine. ‘Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.’

Sometimes it’s just easier not to listen. We know we need to do something differently, change something in our lives, maybe make restitution for something. But instead we cover our ears and go “la la la la la!” and then dive back into the things that make us feel good. After all, we reason, life is short. We need to take time to stop and smell the roses.

But I find that life is much more fulfilling when I look honestly at what needs to change in me, and then ask God to help me take the actions necessary. It might not involve “weeping and mourning, baldness and putting on sackcloth” but there might be some difficult emotional work involved. Sometimes when I just cover my ears and go “la la la la la!” I wind up far worse off than if I’m just willing to do what needs to be done.

Am I avoiding something in my life that God is calling me to look at?
