Genesis 6:1-8, Human Wickedness

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And the Lord was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.
— Genesis 6:6

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, September 13, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

How bad would we have to be for God to regret creating us? Pretty bad, I imagine. This passage says that “every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually.” That’s pretty severe. As frustrated as I often am with the state of the world and the actions of its people, I stubbornly hang onto the belief that human beings are more good than evil, that at the heart of it, we are all doing our best, even if we remain sinful and broken.

Our wickedness still causes God grief, but in Christ, God extends boundless grace, mercy, and love, and we no longer need to fear that God will give up and turn away from us.

Gracious God, forgive me for any actions that grieve your heart, and keep me ever grateful for your patience and love. Amen.
