Genesis 4:17-26, Beginnings of Civilization

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

To Seth also a son was born, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to invoke the name of the Lord.

Enosh was Adam and Eve’s grandson through their son, Seth. We read in the early part of Genesis how humanity spread from the garden and began to slowly grow. It’s interesting to note that before Enosh, people didn’t “invoke the name of the Lord,” which is “Yahweh.” So Seth and his son are important, because it was they who began to worship God by the name of Yahweh, long before Abraham and the Israelite people.

It is Yahweh whom we still love and serve today, who calls us by name, just as we name God not just “Yahweh” or “Lord,” but also by dozens of other names that reflect our experience of God. Abba, Father, Mother, Friend, Holy Spirit, I Am.

How do I name God in my life today?
