Genesis 24:50-67, Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Our reading continues the contiguous story of “How Isaac Met Rebekah.”

I find the cutest part of today’s reading (if a passage from the Bible can be considered “cute”) is the part where Isaac is “comforted” by Rebekah after his mother Sarah’s death.

At the same time, it’s not just heart-warming, but true.

I dread the day my parents will die. My father is in currently poor health. We don’t know how much longer he’s got. I take as much time to spend with both my parents while they’re still here. (And I hope they live several decades longer.)

I can relate, too, to Rebekah’s presence to Isaac, when his mother Sarah passes. I’m fortunate to be in a very good marriage with a woman who loves me and my family deeply. One of the great gifts of God is marriage, that people can find another with whom to share one’s life.

God, thank you for families. Thank you for marriages. And thank you, for my parents. Amen.
