Genesis 24:28-49, Choosing of Rebekah

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Now then, if you will deal loyally and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so that I may turn either to the right hand or to the left.’

Today’s reading from the daily readings of the Narrative Lectionary continue the story of the choosing of Rebekah from yesterday.

On second glance, it never fails to amaze me how this story feels like “horse-swapping” between male parties. Again, I think some of my perception is cultural—at least in the western world we would never act this way. (Well, I HOPE that you aren’t out there making choices of pairings for your kids in this way, anymore!)

But on third glance, you realize how God was working to bring about God’s promise of Jesus—through a long line of relatives—into the world.

It once again shows that God works through our human means to bring about salvation.

Thank you, God, for providing for families, everywhere. Amen.
