Genesis 24:1-27, Choosing of Rebekah

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Before he had finished speaking, there was Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, coming out with her water-jar on her shoulder. The girl was very fair to look upon, a virgin whom no man had known. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up.

One wonders what Rebekah looked like at that time. If you think about the implications of today’s reading, isn’t it interesting how it might be read from a modern perspective.

A man of advanced age comes to water his camels. Rebekah exits her tent and approaches him. Abraham stays the night, and, voila—he’s got a new daughter-in-law.

Things certainly were done differently in the days of the Old Testament!

Still, God’s promises come to fruition through human means, and that means that they come through whatever traditions a culture follows at a certain time.

How do our cultural practices affect how God relates with us?
