Ego is an extremely dangerous thing. Pharaoh had oodles of it. His people worshipped him as a god. As such, he could do whatever he pleased with no societal consequences. He could hold entire peoples in slavery, decree the murder of their offspring, oppress them at every turn, and still sleep soundly at night.

Ego has run rampant throughout human history. It has justified—and continues to justify—four hundred years of slavery and oppression of African Americans. It has justified—and continues to justify—gross inequities between those few with power and wealth and the masses with neither. It has justified—and continues to justify—unbelievable acts of dishonesty, misuse of power, miscarriage of justice, and far worse in the current U.S. presidency.

God sees it. And, as with Moses, God calls us to declare the truth of what we see, and act accordingly.

Empowering God, help me set aside my own ego and give me courage to speak truth to the power. Amen.
