Exodus 8:20-9:12, Plagues 4-6

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people live, so that no swarms of flies shall be there, that you may know that I the Lord am in this land. Thus I will make a distinction between my people and your people.
— Exodus 8:22-23a

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, October 2, 2020

by R. M. Fergus, Clergy Stuff

There is no distinction, now. We’re all under the heavy hand of the plagues we have set free in this world by our own human actions and inactions. Climate change, poverty, injustice, disease, you name it.

Through Christ, we are all one people. There is no “my people and your people” anymore. We’re in this together. And that means if anyone suffers, we all suffer. God has not caused any of these modern plagues to prove some sort of point—the credit is all ours. But God is calling us through the world’s exquisite pain to wake up and take action on behalf of the environment and all the world’s inhabitants.

Exhorting God, inspire and direct me to use my gifts for the healing of all your creation. Amen.
