Exodus 2:1-25, Birth and Youth of Moses

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and she took him as her son. She named him Moses, ‘because’, she said, ‘I drew him out of the water.’

I dig history. I’ve found that as I grow older, I become more and more curious of the lives of my forebears, because I will one day be a “forebear.”

In any event, this past month I happened to be reading about the ancient Babylonians, their rulers, their cities, and what they believed. And, lo and behold, there existed a Babylonian tale which had nearly the same story as we have today!

It had to do with the great ruler Sargon, and his origin. Here’s one link of the connection right here.

So, I begin to wonder the nature of the story in the Bible, not so much its veracity or whether it really happened, but that the theme of one who was drawn out of water to be saved and then rule is a classic story of what we all aspire to.

What I mean is that Moses, as a kid, had it good, but noticed that others didn’t have it so good.

Justice prevails, even from the unlikeliest spots!

God, you drew me, too, out of water that I might see others as my brothers and sisters. Grant me eyes to see and ears to hear! Amen.
