Any parent of a teenager knows that wisdom comes with age and experience. Simply declaring “live as wise people” seems a little ridiculous. We all need to go out and be the prodigal son for a while, knowing that God is waiting for us to get ourselves together and come home, all the wiser.

Now that I’m almost fifty, I still won’t claim to be all-wise. Yes, I have a great deal more wisdom now than I ever had when I was 18 or 27 or even 40. But there is always room to continue to make the choice to live as a wise person. And I do that by living in community with other wise people and unwise people and listening to the experience of others. There is no one I cannot learn from if I am open to it. True wisdom means acknowledging just how much more wisdom we need to learn.

Who in my life do I consider to be wise? Why?
