There are those who deliberately keep others “in the dark” as a way to hold power over them. Living as a child of the light, I think, is less about avoiding a list of behaviors some people find objectionable, and more about bringing the truth out into the open. It means turning over the rocks of oppressive systems and exposing the injustices inherent in them. It means confronting our own tendencies to want to keep things covered so we don’t have to take action to address things. It means educating ourselves—casting light on our own ignorance—so we can take appropriate steps to respond. It is this that God calls us to, and God’s light that we shed on the world. For the fruit of that kind of light is the God’s justice.

Am I willing to cast light on my own complicity in unjust systems?
