Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Monday, April 27, 2020

Did you know that in the early church, one big fight of the day was whether there was a “heaven” or a resurrection of the dead?
One of the great things about learning the history behind the texts we read in the Bible is that the stories begin to come to life. Yes, they too were human beings, but they did have different disputes than we do today.
I can’t think of any churches today who would boldly claim that there is no resurrection of the dead. Heck, even most Jewish denominations and flavors believe in an afterlife, in whatever its form.
The hope of the gospel goes beyond what lies for us at the end of our lies. Yes, this much is certain. But reminding ourselves, that even in death we are not separated, but that we will rise again, means that we place an inordinate amount of trust in something that is much, much bigger than ourselves.
That’s hard. I pray daily that God gives me strength to go on.
