Acts 2:37-42, The First Converts

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Peter said, ‘For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.’

I love these words! Peter doesn’t say, “The promise is for you and the people who are just like you, who think the way you think, and who fit into the parameters you’ve outlined.” God’s promise is way bigger than anything we can dream up ourselves.

Studies of bias have shown that the human brain automatically categorizes people into in-groups and out-groups, and that people will behave in ways that reward those in their in-groups and punish those in their out-groups. It’s actually depressing to read about. But this is why we need God’s promise! Because God has the power to help us fight our own biases so that we can extend God’s love far beyond our own in-groups, affirming that the promise is for “everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.” Which, folks, is everyone.

How can I combat my own biases in extending love and service to everyone around me?
