Acts 2:1-13, The Coming of the Holy Spirit

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

Pentecost, or the coming of the Holy Spirit, has nearly always been a bit of an oddity for mainstream churches. We don’t know quite what to do with it.

Having served as an ELCA leader, I know that the Holy Spirit makes me feel uncomfortable. I’m not one to even get up on the dance floor at a wedding—raise my hands high in praise of the spirit? No way!

But it’s time that we reconsider the work of the spirit and consider actually what that means for us. For some, it simply means an inspiration to make one’s self vulnerable to the work of God. To others, it means to praise loudly or even dance.

What does it mean for you?
