Acts 1:15-26, Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then they prayed and said, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”

If you haven’t yet read the entirety of the selection for today’s reading, I might warn you that it’s rather gruesome. As if Judas already hadn’t suffered enough by betraying Jesus, the writer in Acts had to tell us that Judas’ ultimate fate was even worse. (TLDR version: blood ‘n guts).

Whatever the case, the disciples have seen fit to select another from their number to count as “official” apostles of Jesus. (I suppose it’s because eleven going out doesn’t have quite that ring to it as twelve.)

Leadership is a difficult thing to choose. I once believed that I was a leader in my field. Now, I don’t believe I am. I think it’s just as best that we have good, sensible followers, too. Nowadays, it seems like people follow another too easily. When populism rules the day, it’s too simple to rah-rah into oblivion.

But weak, human leadership is how God has chosen to build God’s church in the world.

Just look at Peter, the denier: he was the first Pope!
