Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, November 30, 2019
by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff
Bummer about Josiah. In a long string of kings who led the people away from God, he was one of the few good ones. He re-discovered the law of Moses, reinstated Passover, worked to draw the people back into relationship with the God who had created and sustained them. And then, in a scant three verses, he’s killed in battle and the next king goes right back to leading the Israelites astray.
The only constant in life is change. Rulers come and go. Good ones are succeeded by terrible ones. Progress is reversed. Maybe new leaders are better. It’s an endless ebb and flow and so it has been for thousands of years. Only God is constant. No matter what is happening in our world and in our lives, God is there, always with us, always calling us into relationship, always sending us out in love and service. If we cling to the One who does not change, we can weather the ever-changing challenges around us.
Constant God, ground me in your eternal and loving presence so that I might meet life’s challenges today. Amen.
