If you’re like me, you’re generally suspicious of anyone who quotes the Bible. Frankly, this doesn’t happen very much to me anymore. And it’s not just because I’m not serving as a pastor today (I did serve as an ordained ELCA minister for 10+ years in western North Dakota).

I know of very few people who read the Bible every day. I don’t. Most of the time, my monthly duties with Clergy Stuff is what keeps me connected to God’s Word. That, and attending worship once every 3 weeks or so.

As a book, the Bible is difficult to read. And boring, too. Sure, there are tons of great tidbits here and there, and of course there’s the general message of Jesus Christ. That last part is the only part I’d really die for, though. I’d stake my life on Jesus, because it’s who I am. The rest of the Bible, though? It’s merely a backdrop.

What meaning do we dig out of today’s reading, though? Hilkiah sought to find the meaning of scripture, because it was law; it was what was important.

I’d say that it’s encouragement to look to God when life demands it.

How often do we do that? Not enough, I’d guess. I don’t!

God, help me return to you at all times, not just the difficult times. Amen.
