2 Corinthians 13:1-10, Further Warning

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in the faith.

The practice of self-examination is as old as faith itself. It requires one simple ingredient for it to yield bountiful results: honesty. There’s no point in looking at yourself, your behavior, your attitudes, your thoughts, if you’re not going to be unblinkingly honest about everything.

It’s easier said than done. Too often we fall into patterns of self-justification. “Well, sure, that maybe wasn’t the right thing to do, but that person did far worse to me…” and so forth.

At the moment, we in the States and around the world are being confronted with the pervasive and systemic racism in our societies. It is a time for serious—and probably painful—self examination. Are we living in the faith if we directly or indirectly support oppressive systems? Are we living in the faith if we continue to ignore or deny our own racism in our everyday actions or lack of action? We need to get 100% honest with ourselves and one another if we are ever going to achieve justice in the world.

How am I not being honest with myself about my actions and attitudes?
