1 Samuel 3:1-18, God Calls Samuel

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

In what ways does the word of God come to you these days? Recently, because of the pandemic, our family has (occasionally) been worshiping online. Many churches around the country have been doing so. I have to admit, there is part of it that is really nice, sitting in your living room with your family, listening to the word and partaking of sacramental crackers and apple-j.

For one thing, you can stand up to take a bathroom break without anyone batting an eye.

But there really is something lost with that one-on-one, person-to-person contact, isn’t there?

Others I hear are doing drive-in services. That’ll only work for the summer, at least in Minnesota where I live.

It is a strange time to be the church, but the church has also never been as relevant as it is (and needs to be), right now. Strange days came to those in Old Testament times, too. The calling of Samuel is only one example. Considering the bad news he had to tell, that certainly didn’t make it any easier for him either.

In it all, God will speak, however God can speak. And we will get through, with God.

God, speak a relevant word for my life, that I, too, like Samuel, may be a servant for you. Amen.
