1 Kings 18:41-46, The Drought Ends

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

At the seventh time he said, ‘Look, a little cloud no bigger than a person’s hand is rising out of the sea.’ Then he said, ‘Go and say to Ahab, “Harness your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.”

Thank God almighty. The rain has finally come. The drought has ended. King Ahab repented and God relented.

Wouldn’t it be nice if it were so easily resolved in real life?

Dunno about you, but I’m a skeptic when it comes to Pollyanna-like endings. But, there we have it. Right in the Bible.

What’s a faithful person to believe? I think in cases like this, we take the story at its own conclusions.

The rain was withheld. The leader repented. The rain returned.

Within it all, we were always still dependent on God. And God was faithful.

Sometimes I think it’s okay to not think too hard and just leave it at that!

Lord, wash down upon me your graces today. Remind me of your steadfast love. Amen.
