1 Kings 12:25-33, Jeroboam’s Golden Calves

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold. He said to the people, ‘You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’

You’d think that Israel would have learned by now.

I mean . . . over and over, time and again, they or their idiot leaders kept turning back to idols to place their trust and devotion. And time and time again, God has to remind them that God is God, and not the little golden calves they so meticulously crafted in place of the one, true God.

It’s true, they should have known better. But oh, how so often should we have, as well. It’s easy to build a new idol we worship, and so often we forget that our trust, hope, and love is placed in the very thing that is not God.

This week, challenge yourself to look for the idols you create in your life.
