1 Corinthians 2:6-16, The True Wisdom of God

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory
— 1 Corinthians 2:6-7

NL Daily Devotion for Tuesday, May 19, 2020

by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff

Like yesterday’s reading from the daily devotional for the Narrative Lectionary, Paul is still riffing on wisdom today. We get a closer look at what he’s trying to get at.

God’s wisdom, he said, is deep and it isn’t like the wisdom of this world. No, he said. It’s the wisdom only revealed to those who look at the cross and do not see shame or death, but new life, ready to burst forth!

More than ever, we have an opportunity to see this new, deep wisdom in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. One day, there will be a new day. One day, this, too, shall pass. Will we take the opportunity to see that the new life given us is to be treasured? That every moment we can share in the presence of a stranger waiting in line at the grocery checkout is a gift?

The pandemic will continue to challenge us and many sad days are still ahead. Still, one death can show anyone the value of the precious nature of all our lives. And that can bear fruit in each of us.

Do I take the time to recall the gifts around me and thank God for God’s true, deep wisom?
